Beaches
The Malabar Coast has many glorious unspoiled white sand, palm-fringed beaches. Among the best are those at Kappil, Pallikere, Mararikulam and Neeleshwar. The latter two have excellent hotels nearby, the Marari Beach Resort and the Neeleshwar Hermitage.

The Backwaters
The backwaters are a chain of lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast [known as the Malabar Coast] of Kerala. The network includes five large lakes [including Lake Vembanad], linked by 1500km of canals, both manmade and natural. The backwaters were formed by the action of waves and shore currents creating low barrier islands across the mouths of the many rivers flowing down from the Western Ghats.

A typical ‘kettuvallam’ houseboat is 60 to 70 feet in length and around 15 feet wide in the middle. The boat is made of wooden planks joined and stitched together using coconut fibre [coir] ropes and the roof is palm thatch. Cruising the quite rivers and narrow canals is an experience of intense tranquillity and many consider it to be a high point of their holiday in Kerala. Typically your Kerala houseboat will have a crew of three; pilot, steward and cook.
